Often overshadowed by Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru provides a quieter, less crowded climb with stunning views of Kilimanjaro from its summit.
The trek is rich in biodiversity, featuring giraffes, buffaloes, and colobus monkeys along the lower slopes. Ideal for acclimatization or a standalone adventure, Mount Meru is a rewarding challenge for hikers seeking a scenic and immersive mountain experience.
Trekking Mount Meru offers a challenging yet rewarding adventure through diverse landscapes and rich wildlife. Expect to hike through dense rainforests, where you may spot giraffes, buffaloes, and colobus monkeys, before ascending into alpine meadows and rugged volcanic terrain. The trail includes steep climbs, narrow ridges, and breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro from the summit. Unlike Kilimanjaro, Meru’s trek requires a park ranger escort due to the presence of wildlife. With fewer crowds and a scenic, well-paced climb, it’s perfect for both acclimatization and an unforgettable standalone trekking experience.
Start your journey with a morning transfer from Arusha to Arusha National Park, where you’ll register at Momella Gate. Begin the trek through lush rainforests, spotting wildlife like giraffes, buffaloes, and monkeys along the way. A gradual 5–6 hour hike leads to Miriakamba Hut, where you’ll rest for the night, surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
After breakfast, ascend through the montane forest and open moorland, enjoying spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the crater below. A steep but scenic 4–5 hour hike brings you to Saddle Hut, where you can take an optional afternoon hike to Little Meru (3,820m) for acclimatization before returning to the hut for dinner and an early rest.
Wake up around midnight for a pre-dawn ascent to Socialist Peak (4,566m). The challenging trek takes 4–5 hours along a narrow ridge, offering stunning sunrise views over Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape. After enjoying the summit, descend back to Saddle Hut for a short break before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut, where you’ll relax after the long trek.
After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest back to Momella Gate (2–3 hours). Along the way, enjoy final glimpses of wildlife and the stunning landscapes of Arusha National Park.
