Machame Route – Kilimanjaro’s Most Popular and Scenic Trail

The Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey Route,” is the most popular path up Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its beautiful scenery, varied landscapes, and a strong success rate, Machame attracts both first-time climbers and experienced trekkers alike.

Approaching from the southwest, it’s a challenging but rewarding route that offers excellent acclimatization opportunities through the “climb high, sleep low” principle. While it’s more physically demanding than Marangu, it’s also far more scenic and has a better success rate.

Detailed 7-Day Machame Route Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,010m)

  • Distance: 11 km
  • Time: 5–7 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest
    Start your climb through thick rainforest. Expect damp, lush paths and some muddy sections.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,845m)

  • Distance: 5 km
  • Time: 4–6 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland
    The trail steepens as you exit the forest and enter moorland with views of Kibo and Shira Plateau.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower (4,630m), then down to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

  • Distance: 10 km
  • Time: 6–8 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine desert
    Ascend to high-altitude Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend into the lush Barranco Valley.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

  • Distance: 5 km
  • Time: 4–5 hours
  • Highlight: Barranco Wall climb
    Scramble up the dramatic Barranco Wall for incredible views, then descend into valleys and ridges to Karanga.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

  • Distance: 4 km
  • Time: 3–4 hours
    A short but tough hike through alpine desert. Rest and prepare for your midnight summit attempt.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then down to Mweka Camp (3,110m)

  • Distance: 15 km (7 km up, 8 km down)
  • Time: 6–8 hours up, 6–7 hours down
    Start just after midnight to reach Stella Point, then proceed to Uhuru Peak. After celebrating, descend to Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

  • Distance: 10 km
  • Time: 3–4 hours
    Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and return to your hotel.
