Detailed 8-Day Lemosho Route Itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate (2,100m) to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m)

  • Distance: 6 km
  • Time: 3–4 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest
    After registration at Londorossi Gate, drive to the trailhead and begin trekking through thick rainforest to reach Big Tree Camp (Mti Mkubwa).

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)

  • Distance: 8 km
  • Time: 5–6 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland
    A steep climb takes you out of the forest and onto the Shira Plateau, with expansive views of the Shira Ridge and Kibo.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)

  • Distance: 7 km
  • Time: 3–4 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland
    A relatively gentle day across the plateau with great views and time to acclimatize. You may explore Shira Cathedral.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

  • Time: 6–8 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine desert
    Ascend to the Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp, nestled in a beautiful valley below the Barranco Wall.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

  • Habitat: Alpine desert
    Climb the dramatic Barranco Wall and cross several valleys. Karanga Camp offers a short day and great views.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

    A short but important day that positions you for the summit attempt. Barafu means “ice” in Swahili – it can be very cold here.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then down to Mweka Camp (3,110m)

  • Distance: 17 km (7 km ascent, 10 km descent)
  • Time: 6–8 hours up, 6 hours down
    Start the final push at midnight to reach Stella Point, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Mweka Camp for rest.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

  • Distance: 10 km
  • Time: 3–4 hours
    The final walk through lush rainforest ends at the gate. Collect your certificate and celebrate your achievement.
